Gaming laptop buying tips
“Where do I start?!” is the exasperated question many people ask when it comes to buying a gaming laptop. There’s just so much choice, and so many factors to think about.
Well, below, the Comet team has set out our top buying tips to help you purchase the best gaming laptop for your needs.
Brand
The best place to start is to consider the laptop’s brand. If you’ve done even a cursory Google search, you’ll have seen that there are tens (perhaps even hundreds) of laptop manufacturers.
However, not all brands are created equal!
Whilst it’s possible to buy gaming laptops from niche brands, they won’t necessarily benefit from the same level of quality control, warranty and guarantees as more established brands such as Acer and ASUS.
So, bear that in mind when looking at various laptop brands…
Graphics card
The graphics card is arguably the most important part of a gaming laptop. Buy a laptop with an underpowered GPU, and you’ll find that your games are either laggy and slow, or won’t work at all!
But, what exactly is a GPU?
Put simply, it’s the part of a gaming laptop that is dedicated to rendering graphics.
The main graphics cards brands are NVIDIA and AMD.
NVIDIA produces its range of GeForce RTX graphics cards. These are released in ‘generations’ e.g. RTX 30 Series and RTX 40 Series.
AMD’s range of graphics cards is called Radeon (with the suffix ‘RX’) and is also released in generations. These generations include the RX 7000 series.
Without going into too much detail, if you want to play the latest AAA games (think Cyberpunk 2077, Dead Island 2, Resident Evil 4 etc), then you want to buy a laptop with the latest generation GPU (especially if you want to play at 1440p and high frame rates). This will also help to ‘future-proof’ the laptop to an extent, allowing you to play top titles for at least a few years.
Here at Comet, our range of gaming laptops includes models with the very latest NVIDIA RTX 4070 GPUs. We also have more budget friendly laptops with graphics cards such as the NVIDIA RTX 3050, which is still capable of playing a wide range of games at 1080p.
CPU
Another key thing to check when buying a laptop is its CPU. Otherwise known as the ‘processor’, the CPU acts as your laptop’s ‘brain’, routing instructions from one system in the computer to another.
The CPU in your laptop can have a big impact on your gaming experience. In particular, your choice of CPU can influence frame rates and scalable elements (e.g. destruction physics and crowd animations).
It’s also important that the CPU in your laptop is of commensurate performance to the laptop’s GPU. Otherwise, you’ll experience what’s known as ‘bottlenecking’ where the CPU struggles to keep up with the GPU, leading to a reduction in overall gaming performance.
What this means in practical terms is that when you’re buying a laptop, check the CPU as well as the GPU!
What makes a good CPU? In this case, you’ll want either an Intel or AMD processor.
But, let’s not end there.
Ideally, the CPU in your chosen gaming laptop will have a high clock speed (which is measured in GHz), possess multiple cores, and will be threaded.
With multiple, threaded, cores a CPU is able to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously - which is a particular benefit if you intend to do tasks such as video or graphical editing in addition to gaming on your laptop.
Here at Comet, you’ll find gaming laptops that are perfectly ‘balanced’, with graphics cards and processors that are designed to work perfectly together and deliver the ultimate gaming experience.
Amongst our range, you’ll find laptops with Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs, mated with NVIDIA RTX 30 series and 40 series GPUs. Don’t worry, if you’re a fan of AMD, we’ve got you covered. Our range includes gaming laptops with AMD Ryzen 7 and even Ryzen 9 CPUs matched with the latest NVIDIA 40 series graphics cards.
Some of these CPUs have as many as 14 cores and 20 threads! Now that’s some SERIOUS processing (and gaming) power!
RAM (Memory)
A key component of a gaming laptop that definitely shouldn’t be overlooked is RAM (also referred to as memory).
In order for your games to function properly, your laptop needs quick access to certain files. These files are stored on the RAM (on a short term basis).
People often get mixed up between RAM and storage, but think of it like this…
Imagine you’re working at a desk on a task. In order to keep working on that task, you need to refer to a text book every few minutes, so you keep the text book open on your desk next to you (think of this as the RAM). Every few hours, however, you need to refer to a file that you have tucked away in your filing cabinet (think of this as the storage or hard drive in this analogy).
It’s pretty inconvenient to have to fetch something from a filing cabinet every time you need it, so for frequently used files you keep them on your desk. That’s how RAM and storage interact.
So, in order for your games (and other programs for that matter) to run smoothly, you need plenty of RAM otherwise things get really slow.
How much RAM you need is very much dependent on the games and programs you’ll be using on your laptop - however, as a general rule you’ll want, as a minimum, 16 GB of RAM.
As you’d expect, here at Comet we have a wealth of gaming laptops with 16 GB of RAM.
Note - RAM is available in different ‘generations’, the latest of which is DDR5. However, plenty of quality gaming laptops continue to use DDR4 as this is a well-established generation of RAM.
Storage
Game files can often be quite large (in some cases being in the tens of GBs (Doom 2016, for example, was a frankly massive 80GB+!)). Therefore, you’ll want to buy a gaming laptop that has sufficient storage.
In addition to deciding how much storage you want, you’ll also have to decide what type of storage you want.
When it comes to gaming laptops, your storage options consist of two types:
- HDD - hard disk drives (HDD) were the traditional way of storing data on laptops. They did so by saving data onto a spinning disk. HDDs are able to store large volumes of data and can be relatively inexpensive - however, they can be somewhat fragile and risk breaking if the laptop they are installed in is dropped.
- SSD - solid state drives (SSD) are a more recent invention and store data using flash memory. This makes them non-volatile and able to store data even in the absence of a power supply. SSDs, therefore, are very resilient, compact, and ultimately ideal for use in laptops.
You’ll find that almost all the gaming laptops here at Comet feature SSD drives. Capacities range from 512 GB up to a truly enormous 2 TB!
Display
A feature that’s all too often overlooked by gaming laptop buyers is the display.
In particular, there are a number of specific characteristics and features to look for:
- Display size - the majority of gaming laptops have screens between 15 and 17-inches in size (although you will find variations on this including compact 13.4-inch screens). What size display is right for you is very much down to personal preference, but bear in mind that a larger screen usually equates to a heavier laptop.
- Resolution - want your games to look their absolute best? Then you’ll want a gaming laptop with a high resolution display. In most cases, laptops have a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p). However, we are starting to see the arrival of laptops with resolutions of 3840 x 2400 (4K) - so if you want the ultimate gaming experience, buy one of those!
- NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync - if you really want to enjoy the best gaming experience (and you’re buying a laptop with a high-end NVIDIA or AMD GPU) then look for NVIDIA G-Sync or AMD FreeSync. These are proprietary technologies that synchronise the laptop’s GPU with what appears on the screen. This helps to eliminate annoying issues like screen tearing and ghosting that can ruin your gaming experience. Note - these technologies are proprietary meaning you’ll only find G-Sync on laptops with NVIDIA GPUs. Likewise, you’ll only find FreeSync on laptops with AMD GPUs.
Battery life
There’s nothing more annoying than being in the middle of a fun gaming session and then suddenly running out of power.
Sure, you may often spend time gaming at home plugged into a power socket, but what if you want to use your laptop when you’re out and about?
That’s why it pays to check the battery life of your chosen gaming laptop.
Battery life on gaming laptops can vary considerably, from under four hours to more than 10.
Check the individual product description to confirm the battery life of your chosen laptop.
Keyboard
In many games, the keyboard plays a crucial role in controlling the action on screen. But, how do you assess if a keyboard is any good? Here are the key things to think about:
- Key travel - this refers to how much the keys can be depressed. For gaming, the general rule is to look for as much key travel as possible (about 2 mm is seen as ideal).
- Actuation - this is the amount of force that is required to fully depress a key. For gaming around 65 to 70 grams of actuation is best.
- Backlighting - whilst this isn’t really a ‘performance’ related feature, backlighting is a must for the style-conscious gamer!
Connectivity
You may have heard people complain about games being ‘laggy’ when they’re playing online. This is often caused by poor internet connectivity.
To ensure you can enjoy smooth, seamless online gameplay, make sure you choose a gaming laptop that has superior connectivity.
The very best gaming laptops feature Wi-Fi 6 (also known as 802.11ax); the next generation of Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi 6 offers greater bandwidth, meaning you can enjoy higher upload and download speeds (throughput). To give you some context, Wi-Fi 6 is able to achieve a throughput of 9.6 Gbps, whereas the previous generation, Wi-Fi 5, offers a maximum throughput of 3.5 Gbps. Wi-Fi 6 can also reduce latency by up to 75%, meaning streaming and gaming online can be much more reliable.
Other handy connectivity features to look for include Bluetooth and an Ethernet port for hardwired internet connections.
Ports
You’re bound to want to plug in some peripherals or other devices to your gaming laptop every now and then; so check what ports it has.
Ports to look for on a gaming laptop include:
- USB 3.0 ports - this is arguably the most common port type presently used by devices and peripherals as varied as keyboards to external hard drives. Note - there are two generations of USB 3.0 - Gen 1 and Gen 2. Gen 1 can support speeds of up to 5 Gbit/s, whilst Gen 2 is faster, supporting speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s.
- USB-C - rapidly gaining popularity is the USB-C port that is now becoming the standard port type for many devices (including Apple iPhones!).
- HDMI - a HDMI port is a must on a gaming laptop as it’ll let you connect your laptop to an external monitor or display. The latest version of HDMI is HDMI 2.1 which enables higher resolutions such as 4K.
- DisplayPort - similar to HDMI, DisplayPort is another video output port, however it excels at offering especially high frame rates and resolutions for gaming.
- Ethernet - this is another ‘must have’ port on a gaming laptop. An Ethernet port will allow you to physically connect your laptop to your internet router, providing a more stable, reliable connection.
- Audio jack - if you want to plug in a set of headphones for your gaming sessions, then ensure your chosen laptop has an audio/microphone jack.
Peripherals and accessories
If you’re in the market for a new gaming laptop, then it makes sense to buy some new peripherals and accessories at the same time!
When it comes to peripherals, the ‘must haves’ for any budding gamers are a:
Note - gaming keyboards and mice can differ significantly from mice and keyboards designed for regular home/office use.
It’s also worth picking up some of those essential accessories such as a laptop bag, webcam, and maybe even a gaming chair!
