There are plenty of features to help you narrow down the right TV for you: from size, to screen resolution, to smart TV capabilities and connectivity. Let’s turn our gaze to them now…
Resolution
For supreme image quality, you want a TV with a high screen resolution. This refers to the number of pixels that can fit on the screen - with more pixels providing you with a sharper, clearer image.
One of the most popular resolutions is Full HD. Providing a bright, clear ‘high-definition’ experience, Full HD TVs offer the perfect blend of affordability and viewing experience.
However, if you really want to feel like you’re part of the action, then consider buying a 4k TV. Offering four times the quality of a Full HD TV, 4k TVs provide an incredibly clear picture and make watching movies and playing video games a blast.
Should you really want to experience the very best TV watching experience, then invest in an 8K TV. An 8k TV provides four times the pixels of a 4k TV, resulting in a picture that has to be seen in person to be believed!
Screen size
Nobody wants to spend their free time watching a tiny little screen, so it’s important to buy a TV of an appropriate size.
Here at Comet, you’ll find TVs ranging in size from 32” all the way up to 65”.
But, how do you know which size is right for you and your home?
It’s time to reach for the calculator and measuring tape…
First, let’s memorise some key fundamentals; the size of a TV screen is typically measured in inches, whilst the measurement is taken diagonally, from the upper left-hand corner to the lower right-hand corner.
The next step is to think about viewing distance. You will have the best viewing experience when 40 degrees of your field of view is taken up by the screen (when you’re sitting on your sofa).
To achieve this, you’ll need to calculate how far away your sofa should be positioned from your chosen TV. Calculating this involves multiplying the screen size by 1.2. So, for example, if you are looking at a 43” TV, the ideal viewing distance will be 51.6 inches (approximately 1.3 metres).
Doing this calculation should help you establish whether a particular size TV is suitable for your living room.
Smart TVs
These days, more and more viewing is taking place online. Be it diving into YouTube, or bingeing on Netflix, smart TVs allow you to enjoy the very best the internet has to offer, right in the heart of your living room.
Smart TVs typically allow you to install a series of apps, from BBC iPlayer to ITV X. They also normally allow you to browse the web, mirror the content from your smartphone or tablet on your TV, and (in some cases) integrate with smart home devices.
Ports and connections
An often overlooked part of buying a new TV is checking the number (and type) of ports it includes.
This is especially important if you’re intending to connect multiple devices to your TV; games consoles, DVD players, soundbars - it soon adds up!
As a general rule, you want your new TV to have at least three HDMI ports - these are the most common connection type for many electronic devices. For added flexibility, it’s a good idea to select a TV that has one or two USB ports as well.
